BMX Freestyle Flatland: The Art of BMX on Flat Ground
BMX Freestyle Flatland is a cycling discipline that combines balance, creativity and technical mastery.
On a flat surface, athletes perform acrobatic tricks and create routines in which every movement counts.
Key features:
- Individual performances in which each athlete freely creates their own routine;
- A high degree of freedom of expression, with each athlete developing their own style;
- A high level of technical skill, based on balance, precision and bike control.
A Discipline Born from Urban Culture
BMX Freestyle Flatland emerged in the late 1970s, when BMX riders began exploring tricks on flat ground, without ramps or obstacles.
Over time, the discipline developed its own identity at the crossroads of sporting performance, creativity and urban culture.
The first UCI BMX Freestyle Flatland World Championships were held in 2019 in Chengdu, China.
How a competition works
Combining balance and creativity, it is the best acrobatic tricks that are rewarded! Accompanied by music, each athlete has 2 to 3 minutes to perform their routine, without ever putting a foot on the ground, within a 10-metre square on a smooth, flat surface.
Judges assess the difficulty, originality, style, fluidity and variety of the tricks performed throughout the routine, with a score of up to 100 points.
