BMX Freestyle Flatland: The Art of BMX on Flat Ground

BMX Freestyle Flatland is one of the most modern disciplines in urban cycling.

Riders perform on a flat surface, creating runs where creativity, flow and technical mastery take centre stage.

Key features:

  • Individual runs in which each rider freely creates their own sequence of tricks;
  • A high degree of creative expression, with every rider developing a unique style;
  • Exceptional technical skill, based on balance, precision and complete control of the bike.

BMX Freestyle Flatland is part of the wider BMX Freestyle family, alongside BMX Freestyle Park.

A Discipline Born from Urban Culture

BMX Freestyle Flatland emerged in the late 1970s, when BMX riders began performing tricks on flat ground, without ramps or obstacles.

Over time, the discipline developed its own identity, blending athletic performance, creativity and urban culture.

The first UCI BMX Freestyle Flatland World Championships were held in Chengdu, China, in 2019.

Competition Format

Each rider has between 2 and 3 minutes to perform their run on a 10m x 10m flat surface. The key rule is to stay balanced on the pedals without placing a foot on the ground.

Judges score each run out of 100 points, evaluating difficulty, originality, style, flow and the variety of tricks performed throughout the routine.
